Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) are at the heart of value-based care and play a central role in the continuous improvement of the healthcare system. Yet our recent study has shown that they need to be more utilized.
The healthcare professionals and patient organization representatives interviewed agreed on their potential to assess and personalize care. However, the obstacles to their implementation are numerous: lack of training, resistance to change, limited resources, technological problems and data integration challenges.
Patient organizations also express concern about the possible depersonalization of care if these tools are misused.
Yet their adoption can transform clinical and organizational practice by putting individual patients at the center of the decision-making process. By investing in training, simplifying their technological integration, and demonstrating their concrete benefits, PROMs and PREMs can become allies for more humane and effective care.
